When Toyota and Subaru joint forces to create the 86/BRZ/FRS, they successfully created a pure driving machine with the opportunity for owners to enhance it even further with their own modifications.
Primarily criticised for the lack in outright power, braking often flies under the radar as a problematic area requiring significant improvement.
Thankfully, D2 has a long term solution with our brake kits especially designed for the 86/BRZ platform.
The factory front twin pot 277mm/rear single pot 286mm on the GT and 294/290mm on the GTS whilst adequate for street performance, has major drawbacks on the track such as overheating, mediocre modulation and low bite primarily due to the small caliper, brake pad and rotor sizes.
As most 86/BRZ’s run aftermarket wheels 18″ or larger, D2 recommends a front 356x32mm 6 pot kit and a rear 330x32mm 4 pot kit which is used as reference in this article.
For 17″ wheels, the front 330x32mm 6 pot kit is required for wheel clearance.
Whilst the rotor size is the most obvious size increase, the brake pads utilised in the 6 and 4 pot calipers are also drastically increased.
These two factors equate to a much higher stopping force and cooling capacity required for demanding circuit conditions.
A common misconception is that larger calipers will weigh more than the OEM components – more often than not this is not true as D2 forged monoblock aluminium construction is relatively lightweight compared to the OEM cast iron material.
The 330mm and 356mm rotor size upgrade inherits a minor weight increase over the smaller factory discs, greatly minimised by the 2 piece rotor design which comes standard with the lightweight centre hat.
D2’s goal has and always will be keeping unsprung mass to a minimum.
With a starting price of $2390 for the D2 330x32mm Front 6 pot or Rear 4 pot kits, it’s time to take your 86 or BRZ to the next level of braking performance and appeal it truly deserves.
